SALT LAKE CITY — A Magna man charged at age 17 with gunning down a gang rival in his driveway will serve at least 32 years and up to life in prison.

Now 19, Joe Perez was sentenced Tuesday to 21 years to life for the murder of Carlos Martinez, 40. The sentence carries a five-year gang enhancement and a one-year weapons enhancement, and was merged with two convictions for discharge of a firearm, a first-degree felony, according to court records.

Found guilty by a jury in November, Perez was also ordered to serve consecutive sentences of five years to life for a first-degree felony charge of discharging a firearm, and terms of one year to life for obstructing justice and five counts of discharging a firearm, second-degree felonies. Just 17 at the time of the shooting, [Perez was charged](http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=35125234) as an adult in the case in June 2015.

Police say Perez and another man got into an argument with Martinez on May 4, 2014, about "gang representation" in the area. Perez got a ride back to the neighborhood later in the day with Skyler Burnasconi, then 18, and went to Martinez's Magna home at 3807 S. Armoridge Lane (8180 West), according to police.

When Martinez came out of his home, Perez opened fire, police said.

Burnasconi drove Perez away from the scene and Perez hid the gun used in the shooting in Burnasconi's car until the next day, charging documents state.

Burnasconi was not charged in connection with the case.
