After another week of Mountain West play there's no clear leader. San Diego State and Boise State continue to win, but without convincing wins from either, it's hard to determine how things will shake out by the end of the season.
Of the five games played in the Mountain West this weekend, four of them ended in a score difference of five points or less.
The week started when San Diego State visited Fresno State. Fresno State has struggled this season while San Diego State was at one point ranked in the AP top 25. San Diego State was favorited heavily, but it wasn't interested in running the score up. With San Diego State only throwing the ball 12 times, it won, but not by as much as expected, with a finishing score of 17-3.
Colorado State visited Boise State, entering the game as a 28-point underdog. Boise State was the only team that had never trailed in a game so far this season. That ended when Colorado State scored first with a field goal. The score at halftime had Boise State up 7-3. Boise State played well in the second half, but Colorado State came storming back, putting up the last 20 points of the game. Boise State held on to win 28-23.Air Force followed beating Navy by being upset by Wyoming. This week against a mediocre New Mexico team coming to Colorado Springs, Air Force entered as the favorite. It found itself in a shootout that fell short when a fourth-down pass was broken up. New Mexico stunned Air Force at home, winning 45-40.Neither San Jose State nor Nevada have been impressive this season, but Nevada has clearly been having the better season. Nevada was the visiting team, but San Jose State only had one win to its name over the season. It got the other by upending the visiting Nevada Wolfpack, 14-10, scoring the winning touchdown with less than one minute left.Hawaii was undefeated in conference play, and it was confident it would beat historically bad UNLV when it visited town. What happened was a shootout where UNLV never went away, and led at times. The game ended when UNLV kicked a 28-yard field goal with less than a minute left, ending Hawaii's winning streak 41-38.
