KAYSVILLE — The opening week of the 2016 high school football season was a wake-up call for a lot of teams.

You could argue that there was no greater wake-up call than Syracuse.

Since the Titans’ loss 67-21 loss to defending 4A state champion East on Aug. 19, Syracuse (4-1) has gone on a four-game winning streak by outscoring opponents 105-34.

In the four wins, the Titans have allowed more than one touchdown just once — a 42-14 win at West on Sept. 9. Syracuse hopes that trend continues Friday night against Davis.

“Really, it’s our rival,” Syracuse wide receiver and safety N.J. Mo’o said. “It’s always a big game against Davis.”

When the Titans meet the Darts in a Region 2 matchup in Friday night’s KSL Game of the Week (7 p.m. MT, live.ksl.com), the game promises to be a physical, smash-mouth battle in the heavy rain with region implications on the line.

Syracuse is 2-0 in region play, while Davis is just behind them at 1-1. A win for the Titans could set up a first-place showdown with Layton next week.

“We’re focused on this game,” Davis quarterback Hayden Grange said. “We’ve got to win it to stay in for the region championship. It’ll be a tough game, but I believe we can do it.”

When Syracuse and Davis meet, there’s a little extra on the line, though.

“I’ve played sophomore year, junior year and senior year, and I’ve never beat Davis yet,” Syracuse defensive end Drake Dimick said. “It would mean the world to beat them.”

Defensive lineman Hayden Prows echoed his teammate’s sentiments.

“It would be awesome,” he said. “We haven’t beat Davis in a while, and we really don’t like Davis.”

The Darts have been the class of Region 2 for a few years. But Region 2 play got off to a rough start for the Darts, who are 4-1 overall.

Still, the lone 17-14 loss at Viewmont two weeks ago means there is no more room for error on the Davis sideline.

“We know our team is very good this year,” Grange said. “We should be able to come out on top.”
