SANDY — An 18-year-old man who police say was intoxicated and entered the wrong house apparently believing it was his own was arrested early Friday after allegedly forcing his way inside and later assaulting police.

About 4 a.m., Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger said Jacob Van Doren went to a home at 749 E. 8125 South and started banging on the door. The 58-year-old homeowner woke up and answered the door.

But as Van Doren attempted to walk into the house, the homeowner held him back, told him he had a gun and threatened to call police, Carriger said. Van Doren walked away, but a short time later entered the home through an unlocked garage door, according to police.

The homeowner again confronted the man and insinuated that he had a gun, but Van Doren pushed past him and kept walking down the hallway, according to Carriger. The homeowner at that point, the lone occupant of the house, locked himself in his bedroom and called police.

When officers arrived, they found Van Doren sitting in a car in front of the house.

"He was non-compliant and resistive. He assaulted an officer. They had a police dog there. He also assaulted the police dog," Carriger said.

The sergeant said neither the officer nor the K9 were injured in the assault, which he said did not involve punches. Van Doren received minor biting injuries from the dog.

Investigators said it appeared Van Doren was "intoxicated, most likely on drugs," Carriger said.

While being arrested, Van Doren indicated that he thought he was at his house, Carriger said. The man does live close to the area where he was arrested.

"It's possible due to his intoxicated state he was entering the wrong home," he said.
