LAYTON — Slick conditions and speed contributed to a crash on I-15 that killed one person Sunday morning, the Utah Department of Public Safety said.
At 9 a.m., 75-year-old Stephen Stumph of Clearfield was driving north in a silver Toyota sedan in the rain on a stretch of highway near Layton where there was standing water on the roadway, officials said. Stumph was apparently driving too fast for conditions and lost control of the vehicle, UDPS said.
Due to the wet conditions on the road, the Toyota slid right and sideswiped a Hyundai Elantra, pushing the Toyota back left and into the path of a 37-foot motor home, according to officials on the scene, which then struck the Toyota on the driver’s side door.
A male passenger in the Toyota was transported by Airmed to the University of Utah Hospital with serious injuries and occupants of the motor home were taken by ambulance to an area hospital with minor injuries, UDPS reported.
Everyone involved in the crash was reportedly wearing a seat belt.
