SMITHFIELD, Cache County — One man died and another man was taken into police custody Thursday evening following a stabbing in Smithfield.
The stabbing occurred outside a home at 380 E. 160 South about 5:30 p.m., Smithfield Police Chief Travis Allen said in a statement.
Police officers arrived on scene after being alerted to a fight in progress and found the victim "near the street lying on the ground," unresponsive and bleeding, Allen said. The man had injuries that appeared to be stab wounds, the chief said.
The man was taken by ambulance to Cache Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name and age were not immediately released pending notification of family members.
"Officers quickly made contact with a male adult who is considered a person of interest in this case," Allen said."He was taken safely into custody and has been transported to the police department to be interviewed."
That man's name was also not released Thursday night.
The Cache County Sheriff's Office and Logan Police Department assisted Smithfield police at the scene, where detectives performed interviews and collected evidence Thursday night.
