WEST VALLEY CITY — West Valley City is going '80s to celebrate its 35th anniversary.
The city was incorporated in 1980 when Granger, Hunter and Redwood residents voted to merge together. To honor the 35th anniversary, West Valley City announced Wednesday that it redesigned its website to go “retro” and released a series of photos recreating images captured during the 1980s.
“If you want to see something really rad, check out the total bodaciousness of the ‘then and now’ photos,” a statement from the city reads. “We took actual, like, photos from the '80s and recreated them, in some cases using the same West Valley City employee that was in the original photo. Trust us, they're like, totally choice!”
West Valley City photographer Kevin Conde, who has been working with the city since its inception, took the recreated images.
“The ‘then and now’ photos include WVC Fire Department Captain Lee Monsen overseeing work done in 1980 and in a re-creation of the photo, still serving WVC today (albeit with a little more silver on top of his head),” the statement reads.
“Another photo features WVC Police Department officer Tom McLachlan visiting with a group of children in WVC,” it continues. “The re-created version features Tom's own son, Kevin McLachlan, now a WVCPD officer himself, visiting with a group of children, two of whom are Tom McLachlan's grandchildren.”
West Valley City had 72,509 residents when it was first incorporated but had grown to a population of 129,000 by 2010, according to the city.
