WEST VALLEY CITY — A man suffered injuries to his head, face and hand after his roommate attempted to kill him last week, according to charges filed Tuesday against a West Valley City man.

Edward George Nau, 30, allegedly approached his roommate in the kitchen with a knife and attempted to stab him in the chest. Nau is charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, in 3rd District Court. He is also charged with obstructing justice, a second-degree felony, and the use of a weapon by a restricted person, a class A misdemeanor.

A warrant was issued for Nau's arrest Tuesday.

The roommate told police he was awakened by Nau slamming doors in the kitchen of the residence. The man also reported approaching Nau and telling him to be quiet, charging documents state.

(The victim) believed the defendant was going to kill him, and he ran to a friend's house for help.

That's when Nau attacked the man, according to the charges. The man broke two fingers while defending himself, suffered a 6-centimeter cut on the top of the head and was treated with seven stitches on his left hand, charges say.

A West Valley police officer testified in charging documents of finding a blood trail leading from Nau's residence to a nearby home.

"(The victim) believed the defendant was going to kill him, and he ran to a friend's house for help," charging documents state.

Police claim Nau admitted to attacking his roommate to "(see) if he could die," court records show. Nau allegedly hid the knife beneath the kitchen sink, where police later located the weapon.

The roommate's cuts were defensive injuries, the victim's doctor told detectives.
