SALT LAKE CITY — Elder Richard G. Scott has been hospitalized and Elder L. Tom Perry has been diagnosed with cancer, according to a spokesperson from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The LDS Church said Elder Perry, 92, has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and will undergo treatments starting Friday morning.
"Elder L. Tom Perry will begin radiation treatment this morning after being diagnosed with cancer in the thyroid gland," said Eric Hawkins, spokesperson for the LDS Church. "Elder Perry is the second most senior apostle in terms of length of service in the Quorum of the Twelve, and the oldest living apostle."
Elder Perry was hospitalized earlier in the week after "some breathing difficulties." Elder Perry returned home sometime later in the day.
Elder Scott, 86, was hospitalized Thursday evening as a result of gastrointestinal bleeding, according to Hawkins.
"The bleeding was brought under control and he is resting comfortably," Hawkins said.
Elder Scott, who was absent at the latest General Conference due to poor health, has served in the Quorum of the Twelve since October 1, 1988.
"They are grateful for the prayers and kindnesses expressed on their behalf," Hawkins said.
