SALT LAKE CITY — In the summer of 2012, Lexe Selman was an Alta High School soccer star who had to postpone her college career at Arizona to battle leukemia.
Two years later, with the cancer in remission, she enjoyed an emotional homecoming when she started at center midfield for the Wildcats in a 2-1 win over Utah last Friday.
Lexe scored a goal in a club soccer match the same week she started treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The goal proved to be a symbol of hope for her and others fighting the same fight — a battle she almost lost.
“I love soccer, so it’s been a dream come true to be able to come back from battling cancer and just to live out my dreams,” Lexe said. “It was so special, so nice to be able to play in front of my family and friends again, and all my nurses and doctors from Primary’s.”
Mark Selman, Lexe’s father, said the match at the University of Utah held a special meaning for Lexe and her family.
“It’s the completion of a real tough journey,” he said. “I think today symbolizes the end of it.”
Lexe is a symbol of inspiration for many individuals and families fighting the same battle. Her message, though, is simple.
“Just never give up; that’s probably the biggest thing,” she said. “You can get through anything.”
