SALT LAKE CITY — Skyline’s girl’s soccer team has been in this position before, making a run through the Class 4A state tournament only to fall in the finals two years in a row.

Needless to say, the Eagles are motivated to get back.

Team captain Holly Daugirda scored two second-half goals and goalkeeper Hillary Weizler earned a shutout as Skyline downed upstart Springville, 4-0, Thursday to advance to the Class 4A state semifinals.

“Our girls tasted it last year with a pretty young team, and I think that this year’s tournament we approached it with a need to finish,” Skyline coach Yamil Castillo said. “We need to do our business, but everybody is going to come and play their best game. We have to be prepared for that.”

The Eagles scored 30 minutes into the match when Maddie Peterson’s in-swinging shot from the corner deflected off the Red Devil defense and slipped inside the near post. Skyline doubled its advantage five minutes later when fellow captain Emma Heyn redirected Daugirda’s cross into the back of the net for a 2-0 halftime advantage.

“Holly did great with that run up the side, and put it into the center. I saw the hole in the net and found the goal there,” Heyn said. “It was all my teammates, and I just put it away.”

Skyline outshot Springville 10-9 and looked for a third goal early in the second half. Daugirda broke through just after 60 minutes into the game, falling away for a shot on goal that dipped inside the far post for a 3-0 advantage with less than 20 minutes to play.

The junior capped the scoring with a dagger with less than six minutes remaining, slamming a ball into the top shelf for Skyline’s fourth of the match.

Weizler made four saves to keep the clean sheet for Skyline.

“I think it says that we were going to be strong going into the semifinals,” Peterson said of her defense. “We’re ready to play the next two games. I think it’s just going to give us a lot of momentum going forward.”

Timpview 2, Sky View 0 — At Timpview, Kamron Worthington and Mckenzie Brockbank each scored a goal as the Thunderbirds blanked the Bobcats.

Daryl Kaufusi was in goal for the shutout for Timpview.

Timpanogos 1, Woods Cross 1 (SO) — At Timpanogos, Olivia Burnett scored the winning penalty kick to help the defending champion Timberwolves advance over the Wildcats via a shootout after both teams played to an extra-time draw.

Mountain Crest 3, Wasatch 1 — At Mountain Crest, the Mustangs got goals from Abby Bishop, Marli Niederhauser and Kanyan Ward to move on to the semifinals.

Ella Ballstaedt scored for the Wasps.
