SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man who was shot by police in August was charged Monday with several felonies and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
Jared Roskelley, 31, had been in the hospital ever since being shot by a Unified police captain on Aug. 1. At least one officer had been keeping watch over Roskelley at the hospital ever since the incident, according to police.
On Monday, Roskelley was charged in 3rd District Court with two counts of assault on a police officer, a second-degree felony, possession of a weapon by a restricted person, a third-degree felony, and discharge of a firearm, a class B misdemeanor. He was then transferred from the hospital to the jail.
On Aug. 1, Unified Police Assistant Chief Tracy Wyant responded to a house, 5514 S. Ridgecrest Drive, where Roskelley was reportedly high on drugs and had fired a gun at his mother's house, according to police.
Roskelley was sitting on his front porch wearing a shoulder holster with a gun when Wyant and another officer approached. Roskelley ignored commands to stop and walked toward the officers while pulling out his gun and pointed it at them, according to court documents.
Wyant fired four rounds, striking Roskelley, according to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, which determined a few weeks later that the shooting was justified.
While being treated at the hospital, Roskelley reportedly told investigators and medical staff, "I didn't want to hurt anyone. I just pointed the gun at them so they would shoot me."
