HYRUM, Cache County — A 14-year-old boy who drowned while swimming with friends at Hyrum Reservoir on Wednesday has been identified by police as Tucker Smith of American Fork.
The teenager was swimming in a cove from the west bank to the east bank with his older brothers and cousins when "he became fatigued and attempted to turn back," according to a statement from the Cache County Sheriff's Office.
"Witnesses stated that he began to panic and was unable to reach the shoreline," according to the sheriff's office.
Utah State Parks Lt. Eric Stucki said the boy went under the water about 7:30 p.m and the people he was with couldn't locate him.
Emergency crews from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, Cache County Search and Rescue, Utah State Park rangers, Utah Highway Patrol Dive Team and Department of Public Safety were called to the scene.
Tucker's body was recovered shortly after 9:30 p.m. in 8 feet of water, about 15 feet from the shoreline, according to the sheriff's office.
