SLEEPY TOWN — Whether you’re a morning person or not, there are times it’s tough to get out of bed.

Maybe an early flight awaits or you've had a bad night’s sleep or a break in your routine. Or maybe you’re a Great Dane puppy named Thor who doesn’t understand your owners have to get up at 3:30 a.m. to open their bagel shop.

If I remember virtually any teenager correctly, the video shows a version of a scene familiar to any parent of a teen who is trying to get their child to school on time.

First, the parent uses kind, soft tones to cajole the sleepyhead. The more the teen resists, the more firm the parent's voice becomes in his requests for the dead to rise. The requests include phrases such as “I don’t want to hear it,” “Let’s go” and the classic “It’s time to get up.”

At any point, a little arm rub, a gentle shake or a forehead kiss can be incorporated into the choreography, which can also transform into firmer jostles as the teen resists.

And this is basically how the scenario plays out with Thor. And, like a teen, Thor makes vocal, whiny protestations at the unfairness of the expectation to rise early. But, unlike a teen, Thor’s whines are adorable and hilarious.

Thor makes a few valiant efforts at obedience — he even finds his feet for a few wobbly seconds — but each attempt ends with a flop of defeat. I have a feeling that’s where he’ll stay unless his owners physically carry Thor where he needs to go.
