HERRIMAN — City leaders are considering building a gun range in the Herriman's foothills, but in a community that has dealt with wildfires in the past caused by gunfire, many residents have mixed feelings about the proposal.
Tuesday, another concern was addressed by the city conducting a gun range noise test in the south part of the foothills, about one mile south of Providence Hall Elementary. Residents showed up to see what it was all about. Herriman City officials simulated the noise that would come from a gun range the best they could.
"I didn't really have an opinion coming up," said Rich Olsen, one Herriman resident.
Residents gave feedback about the noise, many through Herriman City's Facebook page.
Jennifer Goodrich wrote that she didn't notice any noise. Clint Zundel posted, "I'm in Valley View and could hear the guns firing. It sounded about as loud as the nail guns doing construction in my neighborhood."
Trish Slussar noted: "I was on my front porch during the demonstration one mile from the sit and the rifles were LOUD here. And that was only a few rifles.:
Residents also have concerns about safety and the possibility of wildfires from a stray bullet.
"From what I've learned today, I don't think those are concerns with safety and fire because it will be well-managed," said resident Scott Thomas.
Nicole Martin, spokesperson for the city said they don't want to do anything that puts the public in danger. The city welcomes the public to attend their regular City Council Meeting on Nov. 8, which will address the gun range.
