PROVO — The BYU Cougars took on the No. 10 Oregon State Beavers in BYU's first ever "blackout" and things did not go as they had hoped.

The Beavers struck first scoring on their first offensive drive with back-up quarter back Cody Vaz. Vaz looked like a veteran against the highly ranked BYU defense.

"TD Oregon State! Too easy!" tweeted @ayoBenO.

Vaz and the Oregon State continued to make scoring against the BYU defense look easy.

Vaz ended up with 318 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

"Vaz has thrown for 307 yards in only 3 quarters and hasn't taken a snap in a game since 2010. I'm sold," tweeted @djcloud_n9ne. "The kid can play. Bravo."

"Cody Vaz is a stud! Leave it to Coach Riley to have a silent threat as a backup QB!" tweeted @amyschwartz1.

BYU's defense was expected to control the game, but they seemed to be playing catch-up from the get go.

"BYU defense really disappointed," tweeted @johncoonsports. "Too many big plays for a unit that was so good coming into this week. That's why Oregon State wins 42-24."

While the defense seemed to slip, the BYU offense actually looked like itself again with Riley Nelson back under center.

"Nelson for BYU looking good on first drive," tweeted @BeaverBlitz.

Nelson went on to have a good day with 305 yards through the air and 29 yards on the ground and a passing TD. Nelson also, however, threw three interceptions. One was partially his fault and partially a lucky bounce for Oregon State, however the picks came at crucial times. Once near the red zone and the other two late in the game when BYU was trying to drive and tie up the score.

Despite Nelson's bright spots, some people seem to want him to give up the starting position.

"Same old story for BYU," tweeted @aestreeter. "Nelson can't win the meaningful games."

"If Riley is just in there for the leadership put him in at running back. We need a real QB," tweeted @tanderson002.

The loss now has some BYU fans calling for a change at QB and giving James Lark a chance.

"It's time to put lark in. Isn't it BYU fans?" tweeted @bobbEdigital.

"Utah was smart enough to play Wilson despite the loss," tweeted @nicknewman801. "BYU apparently isn't. Put Lark in."

As of right now it would appear that Nelson will be the starter when the Cougars head to South Bend to take on the undefeated and top 10 ranked Notre Dame Fightin' Irish.

The Cougars are now 4-3 as they face a tough two weeks playing at Notre Dame and then at Georgia Tech.
