PROVO - BYU basketball coach Dave Rose announced Wednesday that junior college transfers Raul Delgado and Agustin Ambrosino have signed national letters of intent to play for the Cougars. Both student-athletes will be juniors and have two years of eligibility.
Delgado is a 6-foot-2 guard out of Western Nebraska Community College. Under the tutelage of Russell Beck, he led the Cougars to a 26-7 record while averaging 18.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He shot .485 from the field, .433 from three and .768 from the free throw line. Delgado hit 93 threes on the season and posted season highs of 45 points, 12 threes, seven assists and six steals.
A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, Delgado prepped at Springville High School in Springville, Utah, before enrolling at Western Nebraska. As a senior at Springville High he averaged 16.8 points per game and led the Red Devils to the 4A state quarterfinals. During the summer of 2011, he represented Mexico in the World University Games and averaged 5.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.0 steals.
"Raul is an explosive and athletic guard. He's a skilled perimeter player and is an effective three-point shooter. He's an excellent defender and guards with great determination. We expect him to be able to guard multiple positions on the guard line."
Ambrosino is a 6-foot-8 forward out of Salt Lake Community College. In 2011-12 he helped the Bruins, led by coach Todd Phillips, to a 22-9 record while contributing 9.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Ambrosino shot .498 from the field, .438 from three and .778 from the free throw line. He posted season highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Prior to his one season at SLCC, Ambrosino played his freshman year at Gulf Coast State College, a junior college in Panama City,Florida. While at Gulf Coast he averaged 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds and hit .463 from the field and .415 from three. Ambrosino prepped at San Jose in his hometown of Cordoba, Argentina.
"Agustin's an athletic big man who can really get up and down the floor. He's a skilled player and can stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting. He's versatile enough to play and guard multiple positions on the perimeter and in post."
In addition to Delgado and Ambrosino, Tyler Haws returns to the program after serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines. He averaged 11.3 points and 4.2 rebounds in 2009-10 while helping the Cougars to a 30-6 record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
"Our staff is very excited with the addition of these three players. We feel they add great athleticism and skill to our roster. These are wonderful student-athletes that will bring tremendous strength to our program both on and off the court."
The Spring signing period continues through May 16 and the BYU coaching staff will continue to look to add depth to the roster for the 2012-13 season.
