SALT LAKE CITY — Students at Lincoln Elementary School in Salt Lake received a gift Wednesday that will feed their minds and their families.

Lincoln Elementary was selected as one of a few dozen schools across the country to get a library makeover.

What is ... the Target School Library Makeovers program?
Since 2007, Target Volunteers have improved over 3,000 libraries. Most of these projects involve Target stores and Distribution Centers donating books through a partnership with First Book, and team members volunteering their time to organize, clean and brighten libraries. The Target School Library Makeovers Program and Heart of America Foundation selected this school, from many others, because children at the school speak nearly 20 languages, almost all qualify for free school lunch and the current library didn't have a single window.

"Having the school as an exciting, supportive place means a lot to them. They already love the library, but this is going to beyond all of our dreams, really," said Linda Houtz, library technology teacher at Lincoln Elementary.

The grant helps students become better readers not just at school, but at home. Every student gets seven new books to take home, and will also receive up to 50 pounds of food every month so they can embrace learning mind and body.

"Our students are very excited for this makeover," Principal Christine Pittam said. "Our students love to read, and I'm sure that a new library will give that much more incentive."

Volunteers from local Target stores will begin work on the new library this summer, and they are taking suggestions from the students themselves.
