SPANISH FORK CANYON — Two girls died and another was critically injured after being hit by two passing freight trains Saturday evening.

The three teenage girls were taking photos on the railroad tracks near Covered Bridge when they were hit about 6:40 p.m., said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The girls are from Covered Bridge, a small community about five miles from Spanish Fork just off U.S. 6. Two of the girls are sisters and the third girl is their friend, he said.

Cannon said the teens apparently knew one train was coming, but did not realize there was another approaching from the opposite direction and were caught between them. One train either hit the girls or blew them into the path of the other, he said.

"It's pretty tragic," Cannon said.

The injured girl was transported to a hospital in critical condition where she underwent surgery, he said.

The sheriff's office has not released the girls' names.
