FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Real Salt Lake put some consistency in its 2013 season Wednesday night for the first time as it took a 2-1 victory, its first back-to-back win, over Major League Soccer Eastern Conference opponent the New England Revolution off two late second-half goals from two rookies.

RSL forwards Devon Sandoval and Olmes Garcia put goals in the back of the net for the Claret and Cobalt. Sandoval, who tallied 83 minutes, hit the net in the 77th minute, equalizing the match 1-1 for the Salt Lake club. Garcia, who entered the match in the 59th minute, buried a goal in the 91st minute. Sandoval’s goal was the first of his professional career, while Garcia tallied his second.

However, the game was far from over when New England was awarded a penalty kick in the same minute off a second foul given to RSL defender Carlos Salcedo. RSL veteran goalkeeper Nick Rimando stopped the Revolution penalty kick shot, securing the Salt Lake club victory.

Rimando’s penalty kick save Wednesday night is the second of the 2013 season and opposing takers are now 41-60 against the veteran RSL goalkeeper.

Aside from its victory in New England, the Salt Lake club made history Wednesday night as young RSL defender Carlos Salcedo received the first MLS start of his professional career. Salcedo is the first RSL academy graduate to play for the first team.

RSL signed Salcedo to a contract in January and until last Saturday, when he received his first-ever minutes with the first team off the bench, he had only participated in RSL reserve matches this season.

With the win, the Salt Lake club moved to the second slot in the MLS Western Conference with 17 points and pushed its season record to 5-4-2.

The Claret and Cobalt have a short turnaround before taking the pitch again. Saturday the Salt Lake club will finish up its third match in eight days as it travels to Canada, where it will face the Montreal Impact.

Following its Saturday match in Montreal, RSL will remain on the road for one more week as it travels to face MLS Western Conference opponent Chivas USA. The Salt Lake club will then return to its home pitch for a four-game homestand.
