PROVO -- One of the biggest frustrations for many people in Utah County right now is traffic, and the I-15 CORE project has only added gridlock. But now, the Utah Department of Transportation has given drivers a lifeline.

UDOT recently used first-of-its-kind technology to install new road signs, called Trailblazers. They are located along State Street in Utah County in the area of the I-15 CORE reconstruction project.

The signs measure the speed -- or lack thereof -- of cars. They also advise drivers when it will be quicker to head to the freeway or stay on the alternate route.

"It's a valuable tool that we see to help provide information to the public so that they can choose the route that will impact them the least," says Eric Rasband, traffic signal manager for the I-15 CORE project.

The Trailblazer signs take in new data and update every 20 minutes; so on big travel days, like on BYU game days, UDOT says they hope people will use the Trailblazer signs. But they will also need another measure.

"Not only will we hope the public looks at these signs, but we're in partnership with KSL Radio and providing information live to the radio station during those events, so we encourage the public to keep updated with KSL as well," Rasband says.

UDOT has also used new technology to synchronize the lights on State Street throughout Utah County. Officials hope these measures combined will provide some relief for harried drivers.
