DALLAS — An elementary school teacher is receiving national attention after wearing the same outfit for his yearbook picture for 40 years in a row.
Dale Irby, 63, began teaching at Titche Elementary in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, Texas in 1973. Irby taught as a physical education teacher at the school, according to Dallas News. When he was told to "wear something nice" for the school's year book pictures, he chose a patterned, pointy-collared shirt with matching wool vest.
“I really didn’t have anything else,” Irby told the Dallas News. He said he got to wear coaching shorts almost every day of his career.
However, after Irby accidently wore the exact same outfit the next year in his picture, his wife and fellow teacher challenged him to do it again.
"After five pictures, it was like, 'Why stop?' " Irby said.
After 40 years of teaching and wearing the 70's style disco outfit for his school picture, Irby is retiring. Along with having a unique yearbook legacy, Irby was also rated as the favorite physical education teacher in the Richardson School District.
“He took his job so seriously in teaching good sportsmanship — both in athletics and in life,” the Prestonwood principal Pam Aitken said. “He taught a lot of kids to be fair and respectful of others. That’s a great legacy to leave.”
