AMERICAN FORK, Utah (AP) -- A month after a bus crash killed one of its instructors, the American Fork High School band is on the verge of traveling to Indianapolis for a national competition.

The Daily Herald in Provo reported on its Web site Tuesday that the 225-member band has raised at least $231,000 toward the trip.

The Grand Nationals take place Thursday through Saturday.

The marching band won the state championship Friday, then took first place in a western regional competition Saturday.

Director of Bands John Miller says he's amazed at the support the band has gotten to fund the trip over just a few days.

On Oct. 10 a crash on an Idaho highway toppled the bus full of student band members and took the life of woodwinds instructor Heather Christensen.

The Alpine School Board was to decide Tuesday whether the band will make the trip.
