SALT LAKE CITY -- A miniature Hill Air Force Base has been set up in downtown Salt Lake for Air Force Week this week.

The week-long celebration first started in 2006 as a way to connect the Air Force with the people. Every year since, different cities are chosen to host Air Force Week, and this year is Salt Lake's turn to honor our airmen and airwomen.

Starting with an F-16 flyover, and after showing off other skills of the United States Air Force, Gov. Jon Huntsman and other Utah leaders gathered at the State Capitol Monday to honor the Air Force.

Huntsman proclaimed June 1 through June 7 Air Force Week Salt Lake City. "It is an honor and privilege to be able to do so," he said. "Patriotism runs deep in this state."

Then it was on to Pioneer Park for some fun. The Air Force showed off their K-9 units, their weapons and even one of their F-16 fighter jets.

"It's amazing to be this close to them. Not too often do you get to stand up next to one," Utah resident Joe Baker said.

"It is our way of offering our gratitude to the community for our support," explained Col. Calvin Williams, vice commander of the 75th Air Base Wing.

For the next three days, a mini Hill Air Force Base at Pioneer Park will be open to Utahns for free. There will be different demonstrations every day, and activities will be going on for the family. It's a chance for you to ask an airman or airwoman questions about the military.

"We have Hill Air Force Base, but a lot of people don't know what's going on. Now they can interact with these people and thank them for what they are doing," said Utah resident Chris Cope.

Over 30 events are planned for Air Force Week, including an air show at Hill Air Force Base this weekend. [CLICK HERE for more information]
