SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn's return to the 14th-ranked Utes is still uncertain because of his sprained right thumb.
Wynn sat out Utah's 38-10 win over UNLV on Saturday because of the injury to his throwing hand. He landed on the hand early in the season opener against Pittsburgh on Sept. 2 and is still recovering.
"It's a little bit of everything. It was kind of hard to get my grip at first and there's still a little bit of pain when I throw," Wynn said Monday. "But it feels a little better than last week, so we'll see."
If Wynn's thumb still isn't ready on Saturday for the Utes' game at New Mexico, Terrance Cain will get the start again. Cain threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday against the Rebels, completing 13 of 20 passes with no interceptions.
"The first series was a little antsy for me. I was a little too excited," Cain said. "I just had to remember from last year just keep my poise and stay confident and be composed and just play. Don't think too much. Don't try to force things. Don't try to rush things. Just play."
It was Cain's first start since Oct. 31, when Wynn took over in the third quarter to rally the Utes past Wyoming. Wynn has started every game since.
As much as the Utes (2-0, 1-0 Mountain West) would like to resolve the situation quickly, they will continue to be cautious with Wynn going up against the winless Lobos on Saturday.
New Mexico (0-2) has allowed 124 points in its first two games while scoring just 17.
Coach Kyle Whittingham said the Utes won't decide until later this week whether it will be Cain, Wynn or a combination of both playing Saturday.
"We are relying on the medical staff to make that determination. We will see how things progress this week in practice," Whittingham said. "I can't give you a solid answer, but as we progress through the week it should be apparent."
Utah could also be without starting center Zane Taylor, who is listed as doubtful with a sore knee. If Taylor can't play, Tevita Stevens would move over a spot from right guard and take over at center.
Stevens will be working with both Cain and Wynn this week on getting their timing down for snaps.
"I'm not worried about it. Jordan's not worried about it," Cain said. "Nobody's worried about it. We've all got confidence in each other to do everything we can."
