SALT LAKE CITY -- The Mormon Tabernacle Choir's radio broadcast ‘Music and the Spoken Word' has been selected for induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

An official from the National Radio Hall of Fame notified president of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Mac Christensen of the award by phone Wednesday afternoon. The inductees for 2010 were chosen after an open online vote.

"This is especially significant for us, not only because of the very talented individuals who were also nominated with us in the National—Pioneer category, but also because the selection was determined by vote of the American listening public," said choir music director Mack Wilberg.

Music and the Spoken Word, a program of inspiration and music, is the longest-running radio broadcast in America. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir first started broadcasting July 15, 1929.

Also chosen for induction into the Class of 2010 National Radio Hall of Fame are country music icon Ralph Emery; Terri Hemmert, the first female morning drive personality in Chicago; NPR broadcasting veteran Carl Kasell; Radio One founder and chairman Cathy Hughes; and Sam Phillips, the late radio station owner and record producer known for discovering Elvis Presley.

The two-hour induction ceremony will be broadcast live Nov. 6 from The Mayne Stage in Chicago.

Music and the Spoken Word is a weekly half-hour show that is also now broadcast to TV stations in addition to radio across the country and around the world. The broadcast originates on KSL-AM and FM in Salt Lake City, Utah.
