This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Red Martinez loves the trucking business. Driving trucks is so natural to him that Red spent years in the business, working for many companies. It only made sense with his years of experience to start his own company, which became Cowboy Red Transport, named after Red and the fact he also happens to be a cowboy.

The funny thing about Red starting Cowboy Red Transport is when it came down to it, his true passion still fell on the side of driving truck. So his wife, Lisa, stepped in and now operates the business. She's also the majority owner, making this a woman-owned business. Women-owned businesses are having a major impact on the national economy. The rate of women-owned businesses is growing at a rate one and a half times the national average, according to the 2014 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report.

Cowboy Red Transport works in the commercial sector with pipelines and construction but they do some public trucking as well, like hauling top soil, mulch and other items. They also have a flatbed and snow plow in their rolling inventory, so they can keep their drivers busy in all seasons.

Last year Cowboy Red Transport had the exciting opportunity to work on the renovation of the Salt Lake City International Airport now in progress. They helped haul materials like concrete, clay, mud and gravel out and back in again. Lisa said they enjoyed the job and it's helped energize their Pleasant Grove business.

Lisa is the catch-all for everything that needs done at Cowboy Red Transport, coordinating jobs, running payroll and handling HR issues. She's at the point where the company is expanding, so she's working to divvy responsibilities to get her employees more involved with the business.

Right now, some of their largest clients include Geneva Rock, Fast Track Welding and US Synthetic. But 2014 was truly an exceptional year, one in which they expanded so they were finally able to reach most of Utah. The job they did at the airport has been a factor in Cowboy Red Transport's growth.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
