This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Chris Beins of Top Hat Farms in Deweyville, in Northern Utah, is producing some of the finest Simmental cows in the U.S. His three daughters Brittany, Madellyn and Aribella, love to show their cattle at competitions. In fact, this is a family business with Chris, his wife Allison and all three kids enmeshed in ranching.

Their herd of 100 isn't just any cows. These are top-of-the-line American Simmental cows that are pastured on lush mountain areas. In talking to Chris, one of the distinctions that set these animals apart from others is their docile nature. Simmentals are originally from Switzerland. They're among the oldest and most widely distributed breeds of cattle in the world. Recorded since the Middle Ages, the Simmental breed came to the U.S. before the turn of the 19th century and is known for their quality, which caught the attention of the Beins.

Chris and his wife, Allison, decided to get into this breed and are now specialists, producing some of the top Simmentals in Utah and the U.S. This family loves nothing more than to, as Chris says, take a trailer full of heifers across the country for competition. The girls are members of the Junior Simmental Association and have had heifers named champion at numerous prestigious livestock shows across America.

These cows truly have it made. They summer in Idaho, up by Bear Lake, and they winter in Northern Utah near Tremonton. Part of the competition their cows participate in is how quickly they can gain weight. Due to their genetics, the Simmentals gain weight quicker, making them a wise investment. While showing cattle is their passion, Chris says the primary business at Top Hat Farms, as a registered seedstock operation, is to raise award-winning cattle and sell bulls to commercial cattlemen for them to breed their cows. Farmers and ranchers across the state work with them because they know their quality.

These are registered cattle, so their ancestry can be traced back generations. Later this month, you can check Top Hat Farms cattle out at the Utah State Fair.
