This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Utah's construction industry is projected to grow by 6 percent in 2013 as compared to 5 percent in 2012. In the private sector, growth is anticipated for both multifamily and single-family homes. Multifamily homes may see a growth of 9 percent while single-family homes will see a growth of 26 percent, according to Utah Contractor's License Center.

This growth is great news for Utah's construction industry which includes many well-established companies like Layton Construction. This Sandy company has worked on some of Utah's highest profile projects and has active projects in 12 different states. They've built stadiums, airports, museums, hospitals, convention centers, prisons and almost anything else you can imagine. This month Layton Construction is celebrating their 60th anniversary.

This talented group, now lead by President and CEO David Layton, can tell you what it takes to succeed in business. David is bringing the business into the second generation of family ownership. The same dedication which led his dad, Alan Layton, to take $1,500 out of his retirement fund to start a construction company in 1953, is still alive and well. That's one of the reasons Layton has such long-term relationships with their customers.

You will recognize their work in places like the new Questar Building in downtown Salt Lake City, the RiverPark Corporate Center in South Jordan or even Solitude Mountain Resort. In neighboring states, Layton worked on the Mesa Arts Center, Bronco Stadium at Boise State University and the expansion of the Boise Airport.

David says one secret to success at Layton Construction is their talented staff of over 500 employees. The longevity of their employees if unusual in this industry; however, they have a strong understanding of the company's core principles of quality, truth and honor and unity and completeness. They also speak highly of the employee culture, opportunities and work/life balance they feel their job provides.

Although working in the construction industry can be challenging, David likes to see each day as an opportunity to succeed. He feels the future looks bright for Layton Construction.
