Good news for Nate Meikle was bad news for KSL Radio's BYU Football broadcast team earlier this summer; Nate was accepted to Stanford Law School, necessitating his departure after three great years as our sideline reporter.

After a lengthy search, we have found Nate's replacement, and he is a person very familiar to BYU Football fans: former Cougar defensive back and 2009 team captain Scott Johnson.

Johnson led BYU in interceptions last season while starting 12 of 13 games at free safety and earning Honorable Mention all-conference status. In 2008, Johnson started nine games at cornerback until his season was prematurely ended by injury. The 2007 season saw Johnson play in all 13 games and make his name on special teams; an injury kept him from competing in 2006.

Johnson was known as a ferocious hitter and consummate competitor; a player whose intensity was matched by his intelligence. He was a three-time Academic All-MWC honoree, an ESPN Academic All-District team member in 2008, and named to the ESPN Academic All-America squad in 2009. Johnson graduated from BYU with a 3.82 GPA.

I'm very excited to have Scott join the KSL crew, and my broadcast partner Marc Lyons shares my enthusiasm. Filling Nate Meikle's shoes will not be easy, but Scott mirrors Nate's ability to articulate, his knowledge of the game and desire to share a passion for BYU football with KSL's "true blue" listening audience.

For his part, Johnson says he's excited to put on the headset and get to work:

"I'm thankful for the opportunity to stay close to BYU football and be a part of the KSL team! My years playing for the Cougs were the greatest, and I loved being part of a squad working for a common goal. I couldn't be more excited to once again relate to the players, dig into game plans, hear coaches' insights and be part of my new team."

"I feel that I can offer insights on strategy, the players' thought process and coaches tendencies, having been a part of the BYU program so recently. I will do my best to develop in my new role as the "sideline guy."

On behalf of Cougar fans everywhere, I offer a hearty welcome to Scott Johnson as the newest addition to KSL's gameday roster!

Look forward to Scott's reports pre-game, in-game and post-game during the season ahead, and don't be surprised if you end up reading "Scott's Thoughts" on a weekly basis here at Cougar Tracks.
