The annual meeting of BCS conference commissioners featured the head of the BCS getting the Mountain West Conference's hopes up, as it relates to the league performing well enough to secure a seventh automatic BCS bid after the 2011 college football season.

Meantime, conference expansion talk remains on the stove, but cooling on the back-burner just a little bit; suffice it to say, groundbreaking announcements were not be had this week in Scottsdale.

Here is an East coast perspective on what the Big Ten's plans might be.

You'll recall the the other day that I linked to an abstract of an honors thesis paper produced by BYU graduate student Lyndon Plothow. The title of the paper is "The NFL Combine and Draft: Correlation and Implications for NFL Success," and it reflects well on non-BCS schools in particular.

With Plothow's permission, a link to his entire paper has been posted.

In light of the NFL Draft starting tonight, the paper makes particularly interesting reading.

With the news of juco standout Stephen Rogers' verbal commitment to BYU, that makes another recruiting battle won by Dave Rose. I can't recall Rose missing out on a player he really wanted as head coach; certainly not to an instate competitor.

--

Regardless of Rogers' playing time situation next season, BYU's practices are going to be intense, with at least ten top-line players vying for minutes every day.

A quick look-ahead at BYU next season, position by position:

Guards/Wings:

Jimmer Fredette

Jackson Emery

Mike Loyd

Charles Abouo

Kyle Collinsworth

Anson Winder

Brock Zylstra

Nick Martineau

-

Forwards/Posts:

Noah Hartsock

Brandon Davies

Chris Collinsworth

Stephen Rogers (can also be used as a guard/wing)

Logan Magnusson

James Anderson

--

That's a pretty stacked roster, and it's also 14 players for 13 scholarships. Clearly, there are ten "untouchables," with scholarships ostensibly available for only three of the following four players: Martineau, Anderson, Magnusson and Zylstra.

Martineau was a walk-on prior to his mission; my understanding is he will be on scholarship next season. Anderson was part of Steve Cleveland's last recruiting class and has been on scholarship for all three years of his BYU career. Magnusson earned a scholarship after a national championship season with SLCC and is a senior-to-be. Zylstra came to BYU as a walk-on during his true freshman season, but was awarded a post-mission scholarship for his redshirt freshman season in 2009-10.
