ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Kentucky transfer Charles Matthews is heading to Michigan.

The Wolverines announced the addition of Matthews on Friday. The 6-foot-6 Chicago native averaged 1.7 points and 1.6 rebounds in 36 games with three starts for the Wildcats last season.

Kentucky coach John Calipari said in May that Matthews had been granted his release to transfer. Matthews was recovering from a medical procedure for a hip issue, but Calipari had said he expected him to be fine.

Michigan also announced the addition of walk-on Fred Wright-Jones to the roster for the upcoming season.

Matthews will have to sit out 2016-17 before being eligible to play.
