PROVO — Matt Carlino is a scorer, despite his use as the BYU men's basketball team's primary point guard.

The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz. made sure to prove it in the Cougars' exhibition opener Saturday.

Carlino had 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead BYU by Colorado College, 94-59 in BYU's first tune-up game of the 2013-14 season.

Tyler Haws added 14 points and two assists in 20 minutes for the Cougars, who used a 14-0 run over five minutes in the middle of the second half to pull away from the Division III school from Colorado Springs, Colo.

Recently returned missionary Kyle Collinsworth found plenty of time to get his legs back in the exhibition, logging a team-high 25 minutes in a game that saw every roster player see the court. The sophomore from Provo totaled 13 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and a rare block as he found his form across the second half.

"In the second half, I just felt like me," Collinsworth said after the game. "I just have to play."

Anson Winder also chipped in 13 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 24 minutes for the Cougars. Freshman post Luke Worthington logged 10 points and six rebounds, while classmate Eric Mika logged six points and four rebounds.

"They're good freshmen, and we're going to keep giving them the ball," Collinsworth said.

The talented plays came in bunches for the newcomers, including a thunderous dunk by Mika to put the Cougars ahead 85-51 with 4:57 left in the game. The jam was quickly followed by a block on a hustle play on the other end, sending the crowd of 7,221 into a frenzy.

"Eric had flashes of ‘real good,'" head coach Dave Rose said, adding that each of the freshmen needs more consistency as they jell with the team.

Salt Lake Community College transfer and junior college All-American Skyler Halford added eight points on 3-of-5 shooting for BYU.

Ryan Milne, who led the late charge three years ago when Colorado College knocked off Air Force, paced the Tigers with 23 points that included 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. The senior point guard also added five assists and three rebounds, and teammate Chris Lesnansky supplied 17 points and four rebounds.
