YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — A spokesman for Armenia's police says two of the gunmen who have been holding a police station in the capital for more than a week have surrendered after an exchange of gunfire.

Police spokesman Ashot Arahonyan says on Facebook that the gunfire began before dawn on Wednesday. He said one police officer and two gunmen were wounded and taken to hospital. Two other gunmen gave themselves up, he said.

A group of gunmen seized the police post in Yerevan on July 17, demanding freedom for an opposition figure who had been arrested in June. One policeman was killed in that seizure and the gunmen held other officers hostage for several days. The last four hostages were released on Saturday.
