LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) — Slovenian police say they have found 12 migrants hidden on a cargo ship from Turkey.

Police said Tuesday the group tried to enter the country illegally on Monday aboard the ship arriving in the Adriatic port of Koper. Nine of the group were from Syria and three from Iraq.

Police say they all asked for asylum in Slovenia and were taken to a center for asylum-seekers.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants passed through Slovenia last year, but the flow stopped after Balkan nations closed their borders to migrants in March.

Many migrants have turned to people-smugglers to help them enter European Union countries.
