KANO, Nigeria (AP) — Officials in Nigeria say there could be a large number of casualties after an explosion tore through the central mosque in the country's second-largest city, Kano. Hundreds had gathered at the mosque to listen to a sermon.
Immediately after the blasts, hundreds of angry youths took to the streets, throwing stones and shouting at security officials.
The area has been a frequent target of the militant group Boko Haram (BOH'-koh hah-RAHM').
Meanwhile, police say a bomb squad defused six bombs planted near a mosque and a market in another Nigerian city today.
