ESCALANTE, Utah (AP) — Authorities say a 62-year-old hiker from Alabama was found dead in a Kane County slot canyon in southern Utah.

According to a press release by the Kane County Sheriff's Office, Lane Friedman had been hiking with his family on Tuesday when the group became disoriented from heat on their way back to the trailhead. Friedman's wife says he continued hiking hoping to find the correct route and never returned.

The mother says she and their two children were able to find their way and used another hiker's phone to call for help.

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter found Friedman's body on Wednesday.

The press release says state medical examiners are working to determine his cause of death.
