SNYDERVILLE, Utah (AP) — Two Utah law enforcement officials drew cheers from a large crowd near Park City with promises not to help federal immigration officials apprehend people living in the U.S. without proper documents.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/2lRKTLY ) that about 300 people turned out for a Thursday meeting in Summitville that also drew representatives from the Consulate of Mexico in Salt Lake City, the American Civil Liberties Union and Holy Cross Ministries.
Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez and Park City Police Chief Wade Carpenter told the crowd they won't deputize officers to carry out federal operations.
The meeting at a church was organized amid uncertainty about immigration measures undertaken by President Donald Trump, and the arrests of four people early Feb. 17 by Immigration Customs and Enforcement officers in Park City.
