DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware State Police say a trooper returned fire when a man fired at him during a chase, but neither was hit.

Police say troopers were sent to the Alder Park Apartments in Dover on Sunday night for a report of a person with a gun. When a trooper approached two people, they ran. The trooper chased them and police say one man fired at the trooper and the trooper fired back. After a chase, police say the trooper caught the man, identified as 30-year-old Aaron Purnell of Harrington, and a handgun was found where Purnell was arrested.

Police say Purnell is charged with several firearms offenses, aggravated menacing, reckless endangering and resisting arrest with force. The officer was placed on routine administrative leave. Police say neither the trooper nor Purnell was injured.
