PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police in Portland, Oregon, say a 33-year-old woman returning home with her two young children shot and killed an intruder in one of her children's bedrooms.

Police say the woman cooperated with investigators after the shooting early Sunday and wasn't arrested. The woman and her 5 and 10-year-old children weren't hurt.

A neighbor told Portland TV station KOIN-TV that the home had been vacant for some time before the family moved in and that squatters were periodically in the home.

Police have identified the 59-year-old man who was fatally shot as David Daniel McCrary of Gresham, Oregon. The Oregon State Medical Examiner determined that McCrary died of a single gunshot wound.

Detectives say they haven't been able to determine why McCrary broke into the home, but they noted a recent report indicating he may have been struggling with mental health issues.
