LOS ANGELES (AP) — An education reformer says he'll run for Los Angeles mayor next year, challenging incumbent Eric Garcetti.
Steve Barr is founder of the Green Dot charter school network. In a statement Monday, Barr said he's filed paperwork with city officials to begin his attempt to oust Garcetti, who's seeking a second term.
Barr's campaign website says he wants to transform troubled schools controlled by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
However, the mayor has no direct authority over the nation's second-largest school system.
Barr is little known in the city of nearly 4 million people and he'll face long odds against Garcetti, who's been stockpiling money for the 2017 contest.
Political consultant and former Clinton administration aide Mitchell Schwartz is also seeking the post.
