CUMBERLAND, R.I. (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident in Cumberland and the driver responsible has been charged.

Carl John was pronounced dead Tuesday at Rhode Island Hospital after suffering serious head injuries when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle on Bear Hill Road around 1 a.m. Monday. Police say John was walking on a portion of the road without sidewalks.

Twenty-nine-year-old Laura Belhumeur initially fled the scene but turned herself in to Cumberland police on Tuesday morning. She's been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.

Chief Douglas Ciullo says charges against Belhumeur do not require an upgrade following John's death because they already incorporate a fatality.

Attempts to reach Belhumeur for comment were unsuccessful.
