ORONO, Maine (AP) — Statistics released by the University of Maine's flagship campus found that its incoming class confirmed for admission in September has increased by 22 percent compared to last year.

The Portland Press Herald reports (http://bit.ly/24ldY33 ) figures presented Monday by UMaine's Orono campus show that 2,447 students paid their deposit fees by the May 1 deadline, which is up from 2,012 students in 2015.

A potential reason for the overall increase is the 54 percent jump in out-of-state students coming to UMaine in the fall. This year a total of 1,123 students that reside out of Maine were confirmed for admission, compared to just 731 last year.

Joel Wincowski, interim vice president for enrollment management, credited the university's newly implemented "flagship match" program for the surge of out-of-state applications.
