School district brings first bond to voters in 55 years

MAPLETON, Ore. (AP) — The Mapleton School District is asking voters to pass their first local school bond in 55 years. The district is asking for a $4 million, 25-year bond to remodel its high school and elementary school.

The Register-Guard reports (http://is.gd/kKHtVQ ) the elementary school was built in 1957 and the high school in 1948 and both need immediate repairs

If the bond is approved by voters, the district will get a matching $4 million from the state.

In December, the state Department of Education approved a temporary rule to the Oregon School Capital Improvement Matching program that allows communities that pass general obligation bonds to improve local school buildings to receive up to $8 million in matching funds.

The Education Department says that statewide, there is an estimated $7.6 billion in deferred school maintenance costs.
