UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A former University of Maryland student has been sentenced to probation after another student died 20 months after he punched him.
Twenty-four-year-old Arasp Biparva of College Park pleaded to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 21-year-old Jack Godfrey of Ardsley, New York. He was sentenced to three years' probation in Prince George's County Circuit Court on Friday.
The State's Attorney's Office said in a news release that on March 27, 2013, Biparva punched Godfrey outside a College Park bar. Authorities say Godfrey fell and hit his head on the road, causing serious head injuries.
Officials say Godfrey recovered from his injuries and went back to school.
Authorities say Godfrey died suddenly on Nov. 7, 2014. An autopsy determined that he died from injuries resulting from the earlier incident.
