WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A high school in West Columbia closed for the day after a fire starting in a heating and air conditioning unit on top of one of its buildings.
Lexington District Two school officials decided to send students at Airport High School home late Wednesday morning because smoke filled one wing of a building.
No one was hurt.
A statement from the school district said all students, faculty and staff were evacuated around 9:30 a.m. Parents were told they could pick up students at the gym at nearby Fuller Middle School.
The fire department continues to investigate what started the fire. Superintendent Bill James said there was no structural damage to the building. But officials had not yet decided whether classes would resume Thursday.
