SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Zion National Park officials are investigating the deaths of seven people in a flooded canyon last month in an effort to prevent future tragedies. Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh says that investigators are talking to family members and examining the communications of the group in the hours before the Utah canyon filled with floodwaters from a powerful storm on Sept. 14.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An attorney for a prisoner accused of killing his cellmate in 2013 wants a letter he wrote confessing to the crime barred from his upcoming trial. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that authorities first thought 62-year-old Rolando Cardona-Gueton killed himself at the Gunnison prison. It became a homicide investigation after Steven Douglas Crutcher sent the letter to a county attorney.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'nuhr) has scheduled the House election to replace him for Oct. 29 and delayed votes for lower-level posts until after that. The changes could help Boehner's likeliest successor, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is working to lock up support to become speaker but facing an unexpected challenge from Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz (CHAY'-fits).

OREM, Utah (AP) — The Olmsted Hydroelectric Power Plant is shutting down after 111 years of operation. The Daily Herald reports that officials and history buffs gathered Friday to celebrate the Orem plant, which stands at the mouth of Provo Canyon. Rocky Mountain Power says it would cost more to rehabilitate the facility than to build a new one.
