DETROIT (AP) — A state trooper on motorcycle patrol died from injuries suffered when he was dragged several miles by a car hauling a trailer which struck him along a Michigan highway.
Trooper Chad Wolf, 38, died Friday afternoon at a hospital, according to the state police.
"It is with very heavy hearts that we confirm the death of one of our own, Trooper Chad Wolf," state police director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue said in a release. "Our troopers know the dangers they face each time they put on their uniform, but the calling they feel to serve the public is stronger than any fear. Trooper Wolf will forever be remembered as a loving husband, dedicated father and outstanding public servant."
Wolf was riding north about 6:30 a.m. on Dixie Highway and crossing over Interstate 75 north of Detroit in Springfield Township when the car and trailer collided with his motorcycle. Wolf was snatched from the motorcycle and trapped beneath the car or trailer.
The 72-year-old driver entered the freeway and drove north. He eventually stopped after pulling into a rest area north of Springfield Township.
Wolf was rushed to the hospital and listed in critical condition until his death.
The car's driver was cooperating with investigators. No charges were immediately filed.
The northbound lanes of the busy freeway were closed until late Friday afternoon as investigators reconstructed the collision and gathered evidence.
Wolf joined the state police in 2008 and served posts in the Jackson, Flint and Detroit areas. He is survived by a wife and four children.
"My heart is broken for Trooper Wolf's family, his friends and his Michigan State Police colleagues," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement. "The troopers who serve us every day in the name of public safety are incredibly brave, selfless and honorable. This loss will be felt deeply by the entire state of Michigan."
