BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — William Broussard will not be returning as Southern University's athletic director.
The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1IUyixY ) the Southern University System announced Monday that Broussard's four-month reassignment as an assistant to the president for institutional advancement had been made permanent.
The permanent assignment wasn't surprising after the SU Board of Supervisors abruptly and without explanation reassigned Broussard in March for the period from April 1-Aug. 1.
Broussard, though, said late last week he was prepared to resume his duties as athletic director Monday morning. But he reported Monday morning to the office of Southern President Ray Belton, and the SU system issued a brief statement Monday afternoon.
"The SU System received a request, July 31, 2015, from Dr. William Broussard that he continues in the role as assistant to the president for institutional advancement," the statement began. "The University supports the request.
"Head SUBR men's basketball coach Roman Banks will continue to also serve as interim SUBR director of athletics until further notice."
Both moves are subject to approval of the Southern Board of Supervisors, which approved the original moves. The board's next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 28. The agenda for that meeting has not been set.
In March, Broussard said he was given "some options" for the reassignment in conversations with then-Southern Systems Interim President Ronald Mason Jr. and SUBR Chancellor Flandus McClinton.
Broussard said he responded by broaching the fundraising option with Mason, who agreed to it. Belton recently replaced Mason and McClinton when the positions of president and chancellor were merged. Broussard's contract runs through June 30, 2017 and calls for an annual salary of $138,000.
Banks has been paid an extra $2,000 per month while handling the A.D. duties.
Broussard's reassignment came less than a year after Southern gave him a three-year contract extension in the midst of a nearly two-year effort to get the NCAA to lift a postseason ban stemming from the reporting of unusable Academic Progress Rates data that preceded Broussard's hiring in April 2012 at age 33.
The academic committee voted 7-1 in favor of the extension and the full board voted 15-1.
