BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Southern Vermont College is getting a federal grant of $1.3 million starting this fall geared toward students who are the first in their family to attend college, are from modest income backgrounds, or have disabilities.

The college is one of over 900 institutions nationwide and one of six in the state awarded the grant for 2015-2020.

The grant, called TRIO Student Support Services, was first funded for the school in 1978 and has helped hundreds of its students earn a four-year degree.
